Toussaint Legoupil n’est pas rendu. Enfant adopté, né en Chine mais noir de peau, élevé par des parents impossibles dans un village de Provence entièrement dévoué à une secte grotesque, son destin est peu… conventionnel dirons-nous. Lorsqu’il décide de quitter cette vie (que c’est étonnant !) pour retrouver la trace de sa mère biologique, c’eut été trop beau que tout se passe comme prévu. Aidé par (ou plutôt affublé contre son gré de) son amour de jeunesse, la très spéciale Mimi, ce qu’il découvre en Chine va de pis en pis… bref, non, Toussaint n’est pas rendu.
Ce n’est pas peu dire que j’avais adoré les précédents romans du même auteur, Prenez soin du chien et surtout Série Z pour lequel j’ai eu un gros coup de coeur (et qui repartira en livre-voyageur à la fin de l’été, avis aux amateurs de lecture anti-déprime). J’ai retrouvé dans Made in China ce qui a fait mon bonheur avec ces précédentes lectures, mais j’ai aussi rencontré de (très légers) bémols, jusqu’ici inédits.
Les tribulations de Toussaint sont délicieusement cocasses. L’intrigue est bien déjantée, les personnages vraiment atteints, et les rebondissements, nombreux, plus loufoques les uns que les autres – la tentative de viol par une femelle koala en mal d’amour restera une scène culte, sans oublier cette réplique d’anthologie « c’est boooon, les gauuufres« . Le tout est sympathiquement drôle ; il m’a cependant manqué un chouïa de suspens pour être irrépressiblement embarqué dans cette histoire. Et l’écriture m’a par moment semblé trop travaillée, léger frein à une lecture aisée.
Il est pourtant dans ce titres de meilleures trouvailles encore que dans les deux précédemment cités. Mention spéciale aux « bonus » que l’on trouve à la fin du roman, à la manière d’un collector.

Ben moi aussi tiens. Parce que ce n’est peut-être pas le meilleur roman de J.M. Erre, mais cela reste un livre truculent, distrayant, au fort pouvoir gloussant. Et dire qu’il va me falloir attendre des mois, voire des années, pour lire un nouveau titre de J. M. Erre – ses trois romans ont été précédemment publiés à une intervalle régulière de deux années… ce qui nous reporte le suivant à 2012… Dur !
